Canada Expands Sanctions Against Iranian Officials, Entities
According to reports, Foreign Minister Anita Anand said the new measures target five individuals and five entities under Canada’s Special Economic Measures (Iran) Regulations, citing their alleged role in the Iranian government’s repression of its population.
The sanctioned individuals and entities, including senior security and government officials, were accused of involvement in “digital surveillance, censorship, unlawful violence, arbitrary detention and intimidation” intended to suppress dissent.
Canadian authorities also accused Tehran of continuing to restrict freedom of expression, association and peaceful assembly, including through cyber infrastructure allegedly used to monitor and target critics.
“Canada is using every tool at its disposal, including targeted sanctions, to respond to the Iranian regime’s abhorrent conduct,” Anand said, while expressing solidarity with the Iranian people.
Since October 2022, Canada has introduced 24 rounds of sanctions targeting 237 Iranian individuals and 265 entities under related measures.
