Twelve Years of Matchmaking Data Show Clients Rarely Choose the Partner They Asked For
Lyons Elite marks 12 years by publishing the Prediction Gap, a framework tracking the distance between what singles say they want and who they actually pick
TORONTO, ONTARIO, CANADA, August 26, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ -- Lyons Elite, the luxury matchmaking agency serving clients across nine North American cities, is marking 12 years in business by publishing the framework behind its introductions: the Prediction Gap.The Prediction Gap describes a pattern the agency has tracked since 2014. Clients arrive with precise criteria. Height. Income bracket. Career. Education. A five-year age window. According to founder and CEO Emily Lyons, the person a client eventually chooses routinely fails several of those requirements, and those are the relationships that last.
The pattern lines up with published research on attraction. Eastwick and Finkel (2008) found that what people said they wanted in a partner predicted little about who they were drawn to once they met face to face. Eastwick and colleagues (2014) reached the same conclusion across a large body of attraction studies. Joel and colleagues (2017) fed machine learning models everything two people said they wanted and still could not predict whether they would click.
"People can describe their type in about ten seconds," said Lyons. "Twelve years of introductions taught me to write the list down, then put it in a drawer. The list tells me who hurt them. It tells me almost nothing about who they will love."
Lyons Elite is publishing two companion concepts drawn from the same client work. Decoy Dealbreakers are the requirements a client defends hardest in the intake meeting and abandons fastest once the right person is sitting across from them. Idling is the state of dating steadily for years while making no measurable movement toward commitment, a pattern Lyons says accounts for a significant share of the people who come to her at 40 wondering what happened.
The agency has an ongoing research study underway to put numbers to the Prediction Gap, surveying singles across North America on what they say they want and who they actually date. Participation is open through lyonselite.com and is not limited to Lyons Elite clients.
Lyons started her first company with $80 and a Grade 10 education. She has since built three businesses: Femme Fatale Media, a national event staffing and brand ambassador agency founded in 2009; Lyons Elite, founded in 2014; and True Glue Beauty, a clean lash adhesive brand. She also founded the Julia Lyons Foundation in memory of her late sister.
Twelve years in, Lyons says the work has less to do with finding rare people than with getting clients to see the ones already in front of them.
"Everyone believes they are waiting for someone who does not exist," Lyons said. "Most of them are defending a list they wrote before they knew anything."
