Canada’s FM Asks to Use Oman Airspace to Evacuate Nationals
Speaking Tuesday at the Toronto Board of Trade, Anand confirmed she had directly contacted her Omani counterpart, Foreign Minister Badr al-Busaidi, requesting permission to use Oman's airspace "if necessary" to extract Canadian nationals trapped in an increasingly volatile region.
"Our top priority right now is the 100,000 Canadians that are in the region," Anand said, underscoring the scale of the government's concern for its citizens abroad.
Ottawa is simultaneously engaged in urgent diplomatic outreach across the Gulf and broader Middle East, with Anand holding active discussions with multiple regional counterparts. She stressed that the government is "making sure that there are possibilities for Canadians" to receive the support they need in those countries.
The evacuation push comes as the region teeters on the edge of full-scale war. US and Israeli forces launched a sweeping coordinated assault on Iran Saturday, leaving nearly 800 people dead—among them Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Tehran has since answered with waves of drone and missile strikes aimed at both Israel and Gulf states hosting US military installations, sharply widening the conflict's footprint.
With no clear ceasefire in sight, Canada is racing to secure safe corridors for its nationals before regional airspace becomes inaccessible.
